ICT Energy Savings
How can you contribute at ESAT?
In general
- Always switch off the display, even if you leave for just a moment.
- Switch off all devices which are not used.
Switching off a radio, fax or printer regularly saves a lot of electricity without damage to the device. - Some devices do not have a power switch button. To switch it off completely use a switchable power distributor.
- Use a timer for lighting or to switch off devices at night (e.g. a fax).
Depending on the Operating System of your computer
Windows & Macintosh
- Do not use screensavers, switch off the display.
- Put your PC automatically in sleeping mode (standby) after e.g. 10 minutes of inactivity.
- Shut down your PC in the evening (schedule updates and possible backups of local data during lunch).
- Choose economic energy settings (power management).
Go to Start, Settings and Control panel in Windows to adjust the power management.
For Mac go to Extensions and click on the tab for Energy.
Gnu/Linux
- You are the maintainer of the PC: you can always switch it off. You can change some settings in order to save energy.
- PC's in the computer rooms will be shut down at night and during the weekend unless a reservation is made in a webinterface (not online yet).
- PC's maintained by the system group: power management is activated, the processor works at slower speeds when the load is low (CPU Frequency Scaling).
- LessWatts.org Web community around saving power on Gnu/Linux.
